For 90 years, Myrtle Beach State Park has offered a place where natural beauty, history and community come together.
Established in 1936 as South Carolina's first state park, Myrtle Beach State Park has welcomed generations of residents and visitors to explore maritime forests, walk the shoreline, fish from the pier and experience one of the last remaining stretches of undeveloped beach.
The park's story is also part of the region's story. Donated in 1934 by Myrtle Beach Farms and developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, the park reflects a longstanding commitment to conservation, recreation and public access. Many of the structures built by CCC workers nearly a century ago remain in use today, connecting visitors to an important chapter in both local and national history.
Over the decades, Myrtle Beach State Park has become more than a destination. It is a place where families create traditions, students discover coastal ecosystems, and residents reconnect with the natural environment that helps define life along the Grand Strand.
Today, the park continues to serve as an outdoor classroom through year-round educational programs, guided tours and hands-on learning opportunities. Its nature center, wildlife habitat and Discover Carolina programs help introduce new generations to the importance of protecting South Carolina's natural resources.
As Myrtle Beach State Park celebrates its 90th anniversary this July, it offers an opportunity to reflect on the role special places play in shaping community identity and quality of life. The anniversary celebration on July 1 will include historical programs, family activities, a look back at the park's history and, of course, birthday cupcakes for the first 90 visitors.
